The Obsidian Current
Independent. Analytical. Global.
The Obsidian Current is an independent journal and policy institute dedicated to exploring the forces that shape our world: politics, economics, history, and culture.
Founded in 2025 by students and young researchers, The Current was created to cut through noise and offer perspective: thoughtful analysis rooted in depth, clarity, and independence.
Built on the conviction that youth should not only interpret the world but also shape it, The Obsidian Current exists at the intersection of ideas and action. It operates through two complementary branches:
The Newspaper
The Journal is the heart of The Obsidian Current: a space for critical writing, long-form analysis, and narrative inquiry.
It publishes articles and series that explore the dynamics of change across nations, generations, and ideologies.
From the flagship series The Southern Fall to reflections on democracy, energy, or culture, the Newspaper gives voice to emerging thinkers who look beyond headlines to understand the deeper patterns of our time.
The Institute
The Obsidian Current Institute (TOCI) is the think tank and research division of the platform.
It produces rigorous, policy-oriented reports and insight papers on governance, development, and transformation across four regional desks: Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Guided by a board of mentors and built on student-led research, the Institute transforms analysis into impact through comparative studies and actionable recommendations.
Our Mission
The Obsidian Current stands for independent thought, analytical depth, and global reach.
It is a space where reflection leads to reform, where writing meets research, and youth meets expertise.
From articles to policy reports, from the pages of the Journal to the publications of the Institute, every project under The Obsidian Current pursues one shared goal: to understand the world clearly, and to change it deliberately.
